In an effort to offer more officially supported ways to play EVE on Mac we are now providing support for Wine in addition to Cider. DonGÇÖt worry, weGÇÖre not simply posting a long page of instructions for you to set up Wine GÇô the launcher takes care of it all. To begin with we offer this as an alternative to the current solution GÇô you simply select it in the EVE Launcher Preferences. We will continue providing Cider, the current solution, until we are satisfied with Wine providing a similar experience.
What is Wine? As stated on www.winehq.org Wine is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows application on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX and BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.
How do I try it? Make sure your launcher is up to date (version 1016420 or later). Select Preferences... from the EVE Launcher menu and select Wine for the wrapper.
Wine options You shouldn't have to change any Wine options, and these may change at any time as we get feedback. For now, the main option is what version of Wine should be used - we provide daily builds from the Wine git repository (git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git). If you select 'Use dev versions' you can choose any of a number of recent daily builds, or to always use the latest one. If you leave the dev versions checkbox unchecked, you can select from stable builds that will have had some testing. The WINEDEBUG field allows you to set a value for the WINEDEBUG environment variable that controls debugging output from Wine. This can be useful for tracking down issues, but should in general be left empty.
What if it doesn't work? Go back to Preferences and select Cider for the wrapper, then everything should work as it did before. Please do tell us about it, either by posting in the feedback thread or by filing a bug report. Our goal is to offer additional officially supported ways to play EVE on the Mac and we need your feedback on this to do that.

Does telling the launcher to use Wine result in it downloading EVERYTHING needed to run Eve under Wine, including Wine, like it does for Cider? Or do I need to go to the Wine website and download other stuff as well? The launcher should take care of everything. It would be interesting to see your logs. You mean evelogs.log? Where should I send it? There are files called launcherlogs-timestamp.txt - unfortunately I don't have a Mac at home and don't remember where they're located. Probably /Library/Application Support/CCP/EVE/Launcher, or something like that. Put them in a Dropbox or Google Drive and send me the link in EVE mail - don't post it here, the logs may have more detail than you're comfortable with posting publically.

The new launcher works fine with Cider, but when i switch it to Wine, it copies files, then says its ready, but will not start the game. When I click to play, the play symbol next to my name turns to a square, my name turns green along with the line under it. It then just sits there for about 45 seconds, then changes back to normal as if I never clicked anything. Did you re-start the launcher? This was listed as a known issue on the first post in this thread. I did so after the wine files were copied and it started right up. It's a known issue, but not a solved one. Rebooting the client/launcher/computer does nothing to solve it. He is the first one to report having it with 10.11. CCP Snorlax has been able to reproduce the issue, and is working on it. (We have been eve mailing each other). Just now I noted Wine 1.8 showed up in the list in the preferences, three versions (two in the Dev version list). I tried them all. None worked for me. This is taking a bit longer than I hoped, but should be sorted tomorrow. For some reason I'm expected to have a life outside of work as well...

I've published a new Wine build, built from the stable branch (1.8.1). This build runs on the one machine I found inhouse where the previous build would fail.
I'm curious to see if this improves the situation for anyone that was unable to run before - please report back!

The only problem I noticed in the few minutes I played around with it is that no numbers show up in the market history graph display. Please file a bug report from within the game, with screenshots. It is occasionally interspersed with the error, "[f]failed to get a valid ballpark in time after trying 30 times." (CQ has a ballpark?! Where?! ) After a couple of minutes of this, the client becomes unresponsive, and I have to force quit to terminate it. Then, invariably, I get the message that "There was an error writing a file to disk." I have worked around this by loading the hangar instead. (Note: I do not have to be running Project Discovery to get the RenderTarget error. That is merely what I was doing when I noticed it.) I'll see if we can reproduce this in the office. I've been in CQ without errors, but it may depend on settings and/or the OS X version and hardware used. I'd appreciate if you could file a bug report, give me your system details and attach a saved log from LogLite.

Xerxes Fehrnah wrote:Eve is much better under wine. Thank you for this update. It means a lot.
A feature request for wine support on Mac: Every time I start the launcher, it downloads a new version of wine --devel. It's spending a considerable amount of my Comcast data allotment. It would be nice to have a toggle switch that would allow me to reject updates to wine except on a daily, every other day, or as wanted basis.
I understand why Eve updates are essential in real time, as we all need to be on the same version, but wine updates could be throttled or ignored entirely unless some critical update is present that fixes a bug.
TL;DR: let me set the launcher to "notify me about wine updates available, and allow me to decide to reject or accept them."
Thanks again CCP_Snorlax!!!
The Wine versions will stabilize soon. It shouldn't be downloading every time, though, unless maybe if you have selected latest dev builds. Try unchecking 'dev builds' for the Wine wrapper. You can also select a specific build, rather than latest, and it will stick to that.
The current version spends a fair amount of time verifying the files every time, though - that is already addressed in the latest dev version of the launcher that I will deploy next week.

Change wine preference, close launcher, open launcher, let files be updated, try to run it, wait for it to not work, close launcher, open launcher, try and run it again, wait for it to not work, change wine preferences. Repeat. And none of them worked. The only one that works is the non-Dev 1.8.1 - test. Even that one has issues. It creates a window that is half off my screen. I cannot see the right half. Fortunately, I can get to the esc menu and change the window to full screen, then back to fix it. Alright, thanks for trying!

The dev versions are built automatically from 3 different repos, only one of which has my changes. If you have the dev versions enabled, with Latest selected, you will be somewhat randomly jumping between the CCP fork of Wine (which has the keyboard mapping fixed) or the original Wine repo from either the development or the stable branch. Under Cider, which had been the default setup, no graphics would load, I'd only get overlay screens. So I found this thread, told the launcher to download all files to improve performance, and switch to Wine.
Wine looks, nicer, but one fatal flaw. No overlays will work. Hit the button for them, and you see them appear to zoom to minimize. I've tried with and without DX9, and multiple Wine versions. Same problem.
Also, when it was in fullscreen on my two-monitor system, the billboard that you see when you are docked would take up the whole screen. Windowed mode got rid of that.

external file link added Report is up I think I know what-¦s going on - Wine is underestimating available video memory. For now, you could try disabling post-processing. It's a bit bit tricky when there's nothing visible on screen, though. If the client works under Cider you could try switching back, changing settings, then going to Wine again.
I should be able to address this in Wine sometime next week.

After you've changed this in Cider you need to copy your settings again. In Preferences in the launcher is a big button labeled 'Copy client settings from Cider to Wine'. Press that after switching back to Wine.
Again, I'm hoping to sort this out next week - this convoluted process is just a temporary workaround.

Started up after I logged into my alt to do some MCT, had issues on her and now on the main again. This might now be your department but thought you should know.
Happens in Orbit camera mode - have to switch to tactical (might take two to three changes) Please file a bug report with logs:
Go to settings in the launcher, enable 'Run clients with logging'. This will then start up LogLite when you press Play. Once you experience the camera issue, then go to LogLite and save the log.
Then go here: https://community.eveonline.com/support/bug-reports/ and fill in the report (mention my name in the title so I can find it quickly), with as much detail as you can and attach the log file you just saved.
I'll take a look as soon as I can and see if the logs give me a clue as to what is going wrong, and get the dev who worked on the camera to help if needed.

First of all, having wine support is amazing! Cider has been gradually doing a worse and worse job of actually performing will, with random FPS drops and taking an ungodly amount of time when undocking, which have all been fixed for me now.
Secondly, I have noticed that "Hide Wine" does not have a shortcut associated with it. Is this a global issue or is this something related to my personal setup? I have currently fixed this issue by adding a custom shortcut in my system preferences.
Lastly, is there a way for me to manually input the window resolution I want? My secondary monitors are only 21" while my iMac is a 27", and I can only choose from resulotions that 'fit' my 27".
With regards, Kevin You know you can resize the window under Wine by dragging on the edges, right?
What do you mean by "Hide Wine"?

I'm afraid it's not letting me resize. It's showing me the little resize window curser but nothing happens when I drag. OK, that's something I haven't seen. Guess I'll need to do some testing with multiple monitors.

Slickrock Wildlight wrote:Having new problems with the system map since the patch. Unless I turn off post-processing completely, it's a total graphics disaster.
Working with it more today.. it's a disaster. What's the worst is the map. Can only get the map to load 25% of the time.
It really seems that it's overall memory issues.. I checked the memory usage while Wine/EVE was running, and it wasn't high at all, barely over 1G.. is it simply not getting enough memory allocated? Or is it a graphics memory issue? Try the following, to ensure the Wine environment is properly set up:
Open the shared cache folder (View menu, Reveal in Finder, Shared Cache) and delete the wine and wineenv folders. Note that if you delete the wineenv folder you will lose all settings. If you want to maintain client settings you can delete everything from within wineenv except drive_c/users.
It seems that updating Wine versions is not a 100% reliable - I'm working on improving this in the launcher.

Grella Khurelem wrote:Wine looks fine, but there are problems in a windowed environment that forced me to switch back so I can use multiple clients.
The problems are with every button on the screen. The location of where they are activated seem to be off by a half-inch or so on the screen. I'm assuming that this is related to the window bar, but I'm not exactly sure.
I've also not been able to get multiple clients to run at the same time either, but I'll need to try that again another day. I've noticed this intermittently when running on my laptop, but haven't yet seen a reliable repro, making it hard to track down. When this has happened, resizing the window has resolved the issue. I know this isn't ideal, but it's a workaround at least.
I will keep an eye on this issue and see if I can fix it. If anyone runs into this and finds a reliable repro case I'd be very interested to hear about it.

Oh, And CCP Snorlax, are we going to get command-click mapped to secondary click? I run Windows 10 in Parallels on this Mac, for access to things like EveMon and EVE-IPH. In theory, that shouldn't cause problems with either Cider or Wine, especially when I'm not actually running Windows, but I dunno, maybe it does with Wine. I'd like to hear more details about why Wine doesn't work for you. Most players so far report improved stability and performance.
Can you give it another try and report back with details of your issue? Remember that you can log in to Singularity, our test server, if you are concerned about crashing at a bad time.

Hope you can solve this problem. This continues one of the biggest issues for a few of us. The variable that could be at play is the resolution settings in the OS under System Preferences. I have it at default which on a 15" retina is 1440x900 "pixel doubled". Probably this is what wine does capture as my resolution instead of 2880x1800 it should look at. So as Wine is not recognizing the underlying resolution correctly in windowed mode and shrinks game down while MacOS magnifies it up again for retina. Tried playing around with DPI settings in the cfg files ("LogPixels" setting), but had no impact. Hope we can solve this. I miss playing multiple clients at 2560x1440 windowed. I think there is a way to control this behavior in Wine, via the registry. I don't remember the details right now - I'll investigate and see if I can introduce a setting in the launcher for this.
